Cyient Secures Major Contract for Green Hydrogen Project in Norway

Cyient has been awarded a key engineering contract for the green hydrogen infrastructure project in Bodø— a joint venture between Norwegian hydrogen infrastructure developer GreenH and Hamburg-based renewable asset manager Luxcara.

Already sourcing over 98% of its electricity from hydropower, Norway is turning to green hydrogen to decarbonize its maritime and heavy transport sectors — segments where electrification alone remains insufficient.

According to Cyient, the company will provide comprehensive owner’s engineering and detailed plant engineering services for the facility, set to be developed at Langstranda in Bodø. The plant will supply green hydrogen under a long-term agreement with Torghatten Nord AS, the ferry operator responsible for services on the Vestfjorden route. The decarbonization of ferry fleets is a priority within Norway’s National Transport Plan, which calls for a phased transition to zero-emission maritime operations by 2030.

Cyient’s mandate involves delivering detailed engineering and procurement support, optimizing operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with both local regulations and maritime bunkering standards. While small in absolute volume terms, the project’s significance lies in its integration with maritime fuel supply chains — a capability critical for scaling hydrogen adoption in shipping corridors.

The EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, alongside Norway’s own ambitious targets, calls for a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector over the coming decade, with hydrogen expected to play a pivotal role alongside ammonia and e-methanol.
