Belgium’s public transport operator De Lijn has made a strategic decision to cease operations of its hydrogen buses, redirecting its focus toward Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) as part of its electrification strategy.

This shift comes amidst growing industry-wide scrutiny of hydrogen as a sustainable solution for mass transit. Analysts have highlighted that the overall efficiency of hydrogen fuel cells remains a barrier, with energy conversion losses significantly higher compared to direct electricity use in BEVs.

A critical review of the data reveals that hydrogen production and usage typically result in an efficiency rate of about 30%, starkly contrasted with BEVs that boast efficiencies upwards of 80-90%. This substantial gap in energy efficiency drives De Lijn’s decision to pivot towards electric battery technology, which aligns with broader trends across Europe where BEV adoption in public transportation continues to gain momentum. In 2022 alone, BEVs accounted for approximately 20% of new public transport buses ordered in the EU, up from 15% the previous year, illustrating a clear shift in strategic priorities for environmental and cost-efficiency benefits.

De Lijn’s move is also reflective of current challenges in hydrogen infrastructure. While hydrogen has been heralded for its fast refuel times and long-range capabilities, the lack of widespread refueling stations poses logistical challenges that are not prevalent with the continuously expanding electric charging networks. Belgium, for instance, has seen a 35% increase in electric vehicle charging stations in just the past year, facilitating the country’s transition towards a more electric public transport model.

Environmental impact remains a core consideration. BEVs promise significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to hydrogen, especially when the electricity is sourced from renewable energy. Belgium’s renewable energy sector observed a growth rate of 10% in 2022, providing a cleaner supply for the burgeoning electric fleet.
