De Nora, an Italian leader in electrochemistry, plans to establish a green hydrogen plant in Sardinia with a capacity of 50 tonnes per year.
The primary objective is to provide sustainable energy to a local raw materials company’s industrial operations. De Nora is collaborating with Maffei Sarda Silicati to set up this project in a former industrial zone in the Ossi municipality. Maffei Sarda Silicati is currently working on revamping this area.
The hydrogen produced at the plant will rely on power from a 1.5MW photovoltaic solar plant situated nearby. This green energy will aid Maffei in reducing its dependence on fossil fuels in its production of materials like silica, clays, and glass sand. The hydrogen will be integral to the drying process of sands, contributing to significant decarbonization benefits.
The plant will utilize De Nora’s proprietary 1MW Dragonfly pressurized alkaline electrolyser. The companies indicate that any excess hydrogen generated might serve other purposes in Sardinia, including powering vehicles, generating electricity, and heating.
