Denmark has entered a new phase of its green transition with the inauguration of the HySynergy plant in Fredericia, one of Europe’s first large-scale electrolysis facilities producing certified green hydrogen.

The launch coincides with Denmark’s first export of green hydrogen, as the initial hydrogen trailer is sent by truck to Germany, signaling the start of cross-border supply for industrial applications.

Green hydrogen, produced entirely from renewable energy, is a carbon-free energy carrier crucial for decarbonizing heavy industry and transport across Europe. The HySynergy plant demonstrates that industrial-scale production and delivery of renewable hydrogen is operationally feasible, positioning Denmark as an early mover in the European hydrogen economy.

At the inauguration, Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, the Japanese Ambassador to Denmark Hideki Uyama, Fredericia Mayor Christian Bro, and industry leaders including Everfuel CEO Jacob Krogsgaard and Crossbridge Energy CEO Finn Schousboe highlighted both the national and international significance of the project.

The HySynergy plant supplies green hydrogen directly to Crossbridge Energy Fredericia refinery, where it is already used in liquid fuel production. Currently, the refinery consumes 35 tones of hydrogen per day, historically sourced from fossil fuels. By substituting green hydrogen, the facility can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions in fuel production, illustrating the practical application of renewable hydrogen in industrial processes.

HySynergy is the first step in Everfuel’s broader strategy to establish over 2 GW of electrolysis capacity in Denmark by 2035. Future projects include Project Frigg in Revsing Energy Park near Vejen, from which hydrogen will be delivered directly to German industrial customers via the planned hydrogen pipeline, expected operational by 2030.
