The Green Hydrogen project, which DEWA is implementing at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy, is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa.

The 10,000-square-metre pilot plant was designed and built to accommodate future applications and testing facilities for various hydrogen applications, including energy generation and transportation.

Electrolysis using renewable energy sources produces green hydrogen. This technology allows for the long-term storage of large amounts of energy. Hydrogen, for example, can be re-electrified using gas motors, gas turbines, and fuel cells. It can also be used as a chemical feedstock, transportation fuel, a reducing agent for the steel industry, to generate heat for industrial processes, as a gas for residential heating and cooking, and as energy for export.

DEWA had invited internationally renowned consulting firms to submit proposals for developing an ambitious green hydrogen production strategy. The goals are to grow the green mobility sector, reduce carbon emissions from various industries, generate electrical and thermal energy, and produce water, among other things.

The Green Hydrogen project at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, according to Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, was designed to the highest safety standards. It also complies with DEWA’s requirements as well as European and international laws. Siemens Energy, the project’s partner, has extensive experience designing and implementing advanced systems that meet the highest safety standards, as well as supporting the station’s development and safe maintenance.

DEWA is looking into constructing a hydrogen fueling station in collaboration with the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC). This will contribute to the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030’s goals of encouraging the use of sustainable transportation and the Hydrogen Vehicles System’s goals of developing the hydrogen economy and expanding local markets for hydrogen vehicles.
