The Netherlands is making remarkable strides in its pursuit of a net-zero energy system, and at the forefront of this transition is the country’s focus on green hydrogen.

With a robust energy ecosystem and a commitment to international collaboration, the Netherlands aims to develop and market innovative hydrogen solutions that have a global impact. This article delves into the goals, technology, potential impact, and challenges surrounding the Netherlands’ efforts to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen.

As the Netherlands endeavors to build a dependable, safe, secure, and affordable net-zero energy system, the integration of carbon-neutral gases like green hydrogen becomes crucial. Elmar Bouma, Sector Specialist Energy at the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, highlights that the country expects 50% of its future net-zero energy mix to comprise carbon-neutral gases, including green hydrogen. The use of green hydrogen can supplement and buffer the fluctuating supply of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, providing a reliable and sustainable energy solution.

The Netherlands is already a significant producer of grey hydrogen, with over 9 million m3 of it used as feedstock in the Dutch chemicals industry. However, grey hydrogen emits approximately 12.5 million tons of CO2 annually. Transitioning to green hydrogen presents a tremendous opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions in the Dutch chemicals industry. By replacing grey hydrogen with its green counterpart, the Netherlands can significantly contribute to its emission reduction goals.

To accelerate the development and adoption of green hydrogen, the Netherlands is focusing on several key areas of investment and collaboration:

Offshore Hydrogen Production: The country is investing in a network of pilots for offshore hydrogen production. Utilizing the vast wind power production planned in the Dutch North Sea, hydrogen can efficiently transport energy from offshore wind farms located over 100km from the coast.

Electrolyzer Innovation: Enhancing the efficiency of green hydrogen production requires innovations in electrolyzer technology. Scaling up electrolyzer production presents investment opportunities in the Netherlands.

Logistics Solutions: Developing robust logistics solutions for import, storage, distribution, and trade of hydrogen is vital to create an efficient system that connects supply and demand effectively.

Integration into the Existing Energy System: Integrating hydrogen into the existing energy system necessitates technology innovations, along with new regulatory, safety, and certification agreements. Collaboration between various stakeholders is crucial to overcome these complexities.

Long-Distance and Heavy Load Transport: Hydrogen proves to be a viable solution for long-distance and heavy load transport, where batteries may not be feasible. The Netherlands is conducting pilots in sectors like inland shipping and aircraft to explore the potential of hydrogen in these areas.

The Netherlands takes a practical approach to hydrogen technology, emphasizing real-life testing and collaboration to address potential challenges as they arise. The country has established a network of subsidized innovation facilities where stakeholders from multiple sectors collaborate. These triple helix consortia work together to develop and commercialize technological innovations, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of regulatory frameworks, safety considerations, and quality certifications. This collaborative ecosystem provides attractive opportunities for new entrants to test, pivot, and bring their hydrogen solutions to market quickly.

The Netherlands boasts a highly esteemed regulatory system that incorporates limited space, high population density, biodiversity constraints, and strict health, safety, and security standards. Innovations developed within this system are built to accelerate the global energy transition, benefitting both people and the planet. From government investments to world-class research facilities and expertise, the Netherlands offers a thriving ecosystem for green hydrogen innovation.
