Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is embarking on a trip to Morocco on June 21, aiming to explore opportunities for collaboration on green hydrogen and strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Rutte will be received by Aziz Akhannouch, the Head of the Moroccan government, in Rabat, where they will engage in discussions covering various topics, including migration, regional security, and multilateral cooperation.

One of the key highlights of the visit will be Rutte’s participation in a prominent business gathering focused on fostering collaboration in the field of green hydrogen. The aim is to leverage the expertise and resources of both countries to advance the development and utilization of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source.

In line with Morocco’s energy transition goals, several agreements will be signed during the visit, highlighting the joint efforts to drive sustainable development and promote the use of renewable energy.

As part of the visit, Rutte will also engage in a dialogue with students at the Netherlands Institute Morocco (NIMAR) in Rabat, providing an opportunity to discuss Morocco’s regional role and its collaboration with Europe. This interaction with the younger generation underscores the importance of engaging and empowering youth in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.

The visit will culminate in a high-level meeting attended by representatives from Dutch and Moroccan companies, as well as dignitaries from both countries. This gathering serves as a platform to facilitate discussions, exchange knowledge, and establish partnerships that can contribute to mutual growth and prosperity.

Rutte’s visit to Morocco is part of his broader trip to Africa, which includes visits to Namibia and South Africa. The Dutch government’s recent publication of its new Africa strategy, focused on strengthening ties with African nations and forging new partnerships, further emphasizes the importance of this visit.

Moreover, the visit aligns with the Dutch government’s energy diplomacy approach and its interest in future hydrogen imports. Rutte’s enthusiasm for the trip reflects his recognition of Africa’s potential and the mutual benefits that can be derived from collaboration between Europe and Africa. With a specific focus on climate change transition and the central theme of green hydrogen, this visit serves as an opportunity to explore innovative solutions and facilitate sustainable development.
