E.ON and TES to import green hydrogen via Wilhelmshaven

E.ON and Tree Energy Solutions (TES) wish to work together to improve the future hydrogen economy. As a result, both firms have decided to form a strategic collaboration to import substantial amounts of green hydrogen into Germany.

As part of the collaboration, the partners will assess potential cooperative projects across the whole hydrogen value chain in order to provide a stable foundation for long-term green hydrogen supply.

Green gases like hydrogen, in addition to sustainable electrification, are critical components of a successful energy transition. They will be required in the future to replace fossil fuels and to meet the Paris climate targets. E.ON is committed to supporting the development of the hydrogen economy in Germany and Europe competently and aggressively. To that purpose, the Group intends to enhance its investments in electrolyzers, network infrastructure, and renewable energy, as well as across the full hydrogen value chain. The goal is to manufacture hydrogen as near to the client as feasible. To emphasize the topic’s importance, the new unit “E.ON Hydrogen” was established by the end of 2021.

In Wilhelmshaven, Germany’s port city, TES is constructing a green energy hub.

A delivery dock, storage facilities, and a clean, zero-emission oxy-fuel power plant will be part of the site. TES is also developing green hydrogen production and investing in the supply chain and infrastructure in solar belt nations. TES wants to invest in infrastructure to transport CO2 as well as green hydrogen created from solar power to Europe in the form of fossil-free green gas (CH4).

“The construction of a viable hydrogen economy must have top priority in Germany and Europe,” says Patrick Lammers, COO of E.ON. The relationship with TES is a significant step forward for E.ON on the path to a more sustainable energy environment while still ensuring supply security. It puts us one step closer to net-zero because CO2 emissions cannot be totally avoided without the usage of green gases like hydrogen.”

“This is an exciting, long-term cooperation that allows us to pool significant experiences to expedite the decarbonization of the energy cycle,” TES Founder and CEO Paul van Poecke stated. “Our objective is to turn Wilhelmshaven into a global center for hydrogen trade and to enhance the infrastructure to support it.” TES will distribute a combination of green and renewable energy through this center in order to economically move Europe toward its net-zero aspirations. We are excited to collaborate with E.ON to reach net-zero energy in the German market and to help E.ON’s decarbonization agenda.”
