EDP and other companies, and research partners will develop a 100MW green hydrogen production project in Sines.
Companies like Galp, Bondalti, Martifer, Engie, Vestas Wind Systems, McPhy, and Efacec are collaborating on the GreenH2Atlantic renewable energy project. ISQ, DLR, CEA, and Axelera are also academic and research partners in the project.
The new project will be located in the area of Sines’ coal-fired power plant. It has received €30 million in research and innovation funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 – Green Deal Call. To make use of the grant money, a 100MW electrolyser plant will be constructed and outfitted with 8MW modules that can be scaled up and down quickly, as well as an advanced management system interface that will allow it to be directly connected to a nearby hybrid renewable energy plant.
If all necessary approvals are obtained, the plant’s construction should begin in the next year, and operations should begin in 2025. Once it’s up and running, the facility should be able to assist the former coal-fired power plant in its transition to a renewable hydrogen production hub.
