EDP will invest a total of R$41.9 million in a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, with a production capacity of 250 Nm3/h of the gas, according to the Governor of Ceará and EDP executives.

Its operation is expected to begin in December 2022. According to a press statement from the Port of Rotterdam, EDP will have a 3 MW solar facility that will provide sustainable energy to a Hytron-NEA electrolyzer.

EDP already has a 720 MW power plant in the Industrial Area of the Pecém Complex, and this investment in R&D will provide insights into the energy transition of its own facilities, as well as assist EDP become a player in green hydrogen generation by scaling up production.

The Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, as well as its shareholders the State Government of Ceará and the Port of Rotterdam, are quite pleased with this development, as it represents the first step toward the establishment of the green Green Hydrogen HUB Pecém – Ceará.

The Government of Ceará, Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP S/A), Federation of State Industries (Fiec), and Federal University of Ceará announced the “Green Hydrogen HUB Pecém – Ceará” project in February of this year (UFC). This project has attracted companies interested in working in the Green Hydrogen value chain, which includes everything from renewable energy generation to green hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and consumption, including export.
