Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has formalized a strategic partnership with the Bureau of Industrial and Labour Affairs of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance cooperation in green hydrogen.

The agreement, witnessed by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, signals a growing international alignment on hydrogen as a key component of decarbonization strategies and sustainable industrial development.

The MoU is designed to enhance collaboration through technical knowledge exchange, expertise sharing, and joint research initiatives, creating a framework to stimulate market demand and support practical hydrogen applications. Both parties aim to leverage their respective industrial ecosystems: SCZONE as a hub for energy and logistics in Egypt, and Tokyo as a global center of technological innovation and urban energy transition. The agreement also facilitates reciprocal visits and deeper cooperative engagements, reinforcing both environmental and economic objectives while aligning with broader decarbonization targets in Egypt and Japan.

This collaboration comes as Egypt positions itself to expand its role in the green hydrogen economy, leveraging abundant renewable energy potential from solar and wind resources across the Suez Canal region. For Tokyo, the partnership offers an avenue to explore overseas supply chains for clean hydrogen, a critical component in Japan’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
