Enagás, Naturgy, and CIP Invest €1.7B in Green Hydrogen Plant in Andorra

Enagás Renovables, Naturgy, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have announced a joint investment of €1,700 million in the start-up of a green hydrogen production plant in Andorra, Teruel. The project, known as the “Catalina” project, will generate 425 direct jobs and as many indirect jobs.

The President of the Aragonese Government, Javier Lambán, has confirmed that the project will be of regional and general interest, and the Governing Council will approve the declaration of interest on May 17th, initiating the processing of the Plan of General Interest of Aragon (PIGA) to facilitate the investment.

The project aims to produce 80,000 tons of green hydrogen from renewable energies when at full capacity. The hydrogen produced from renewable electricity generated in Aragon will be used partly to produce fertilizers in Levante, while a large part will be available in Aragon to generate an industry of high added value. The project is expected to attract talent from both Andorra and other areas of Aragon and the country, providing significant employment opportunities.

One of the project leads, José Gómez Arroyo, has confirmed that the project is in an advanced stage and expects to have development completed, and financial closure by the end of 2024, with the plant fully operational by the end of 2027. The project will place Aragon in a position of world leadership in the production of hydrogen, generating significant wealth for the region.

Lambán has stressed that green hydrogen production will take place in Andorra, and the hydrogen will be distributed to the Valencian Community, as well as within Aragon, generating significant wealth within the region. The project marks a significant milestone in the history of the community, with the energy produced in Aragon generating wealth in the region, providing significant opportunities for Zaragoza and local companies.

This project marks a significant step towards achieving Spain’s target of 4 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030, in line with the European Union’s target of 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030. The production of green hydrogen is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.

This investment by Enagás Renovables, Naturgy, and CIP represents a significant commitment to green hydrogen production, driving economic growth and providing significant employment opportunities while contributing to Spain’s decarbonization efforts.
