EnBW Sweden and Scandinavian Horizon have announced a joint venture to develop hydrogen-based energy solutions, strengthening Sweden’s energy system and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.

The partnership seeks to contribute to Sweden’s decarbonization efforts by Combining EnBW’s financial resources with Scandinavian Horizon’s expertise in large-scale hydrogen projects.

Hydrogen Solutions for Sweden

Sweden, with its abundance of renewable energy, is uniquely positioned to lead the world in green hydrogen development. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier and a storage solution, plays a crucial role in achieving the nation’s net-zero emissions target by 2045. The new collaboration aims to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable alternatives, focusing on applications in the industrial and mobility sectors.

A Milestone for Future Energy Systems

Mads Miltersen, CEO of EnBW Sweden, highlighted the partnership’s significance, calling it an important milestone in the development of sustainable energy systems. He said hydrogen has the potential to become a key part of the future energy mix, and the joint venture with Scandinavian Horizon is a step toward achieving that goal. Scandinavian Horizon’s deep experience with hydrogen projects complements EnBW’s global perspective, creating a strong foundation for the transition.

Challenging Fossil Fuels

Christoffer Löfström, CEO of Scandinavian Horizon, emphasized the collaboration’s goal of making fossil fuels obsolete. Drawing from their experience with Hydri, a company building Sweden’s hydrogen filling station network, Löfström stressed the need for a secure and stable green hydrogen supply to challenge fossil fuels’ dominance. The joint venture will leverage both companies’ strengths to realize this vision.

Next Steps for the Joint Venture

Over the next year, the company will work on securing permits, developing technical plans, and forming strategic partnerships. A financial decision is expected by 2025. This initiative positions Sweden as a global leader in hydrogen technology, showcasing its commitment to a sustainable energy future.
