ENEOS is investing A$200 million (US$ 125 million) to build a green hydrogen demonstration plant in Brisbane, Queensland.
The plant is scheduled to start production in 2026 and will produce up to 680 kilograms of green hydrogen per day. A portion of this hydrogen will be shipped to Japan.
The hydrogen produced at the plant will be in the form of methylcyclohexane (MCH). This form allows for easy storage and transportation at room temperature and normal pressure. The construction of the plant will start in 2025, with production expected to begin by mid-2026. Approximately 100 jobs will be created during the project’s two-year run. This new facility builds on previous investments in a smaller demonstration plant at the same site.
ENEOS is collaborating with Japanese corporations such as Chiyoda Corporation, Sumitomo Electric Industries, TOPPAN, and AGC along with Australian companies like GPA and GRPS. This collaboration signifies a strong partnership between Australia and Japan in the renewable energy sector. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan’s national research agency, commissioned the project. Additionally, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry supports the project through its Green Innovation Fund, valued at around A$28 billion, which aims to help Japan achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
