The firms announced in a joint statement that they have agreed to undertake a collaborative study with the UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to explore the construction of a commercial 200,000 mt/year clean hydrogen supply chain between the UAE and Japan.
The deal was signed earlier in the day in Tokyo, with ADNOC Group CEO and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan al-Jaber and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Koichi Hagiuda in attendance.
Once established, the project proposes to transfer blue hydrogen to Japan in the form of methylcyclohexane as a carrier.
The project will be developed in two phases, with the first employing by-product hydrogen from ADNOC’s system in Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais Industrial Area and the second including greenfield blue hydrogen generation from natural gas.
The three businesses will perform technical and engineering verification of a 50,000 mt/year hydrogen production plant, as well as a feasibility study on the possibility of expanding the facility to 200,000 mt/year of commercial production.
After completing a year-long verification procedure and feasibility assessment, the businesses will explore timescales for commercializing the 200,000 mt/year supply, according to an ENEOS spokeswoman.
