Energy Vault, a leading developer of utility-scale energy storage solutions, has initiated the construction of what is set to become the largest green hydrogen long-duration storage system in the United States.

The utility-scale green hydrogen plus battery ultra-long duration energy storage system (BH-ESS) aims to provide 293 megawatt-hours of dispatchable carbon-free energy. Developed for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) in Calistoga, California, the BH-ESS is poised to enhance grid reliability and support the transition to renewable energy.

The BH-ESS integrates green hydrogen technology with lithium-ion batteries, leveraging both for enhanced grid stability and resilience. The system’s battery component facilitates grid forming and black start capabilities, enabling uninterrupted power supply during emergencies, such as Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) due to wildfire risks.

Upon completion, the Calistoga Resiliency Center, as it is known, will serve as a vital resource for downtown Calistoga and its surrounding areas, providing up to 48 hours of continuous power during PSPS events. By replacing mobile diesel generators with clean energy storage solutions, the BH-ESS not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances community resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.
