Next year, eRex will build Japan’s first commercial hydrogen power plant, which will initially provide zero-emission electricity to about 100 households.

The eRex hydrogen factory, which will be located in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, in the shadow of Mount Fuji, will generate approximately 360 kilowatts of electricity. The Tokyo-based firm has already applied for a power transmission and distribution link with Tepco Power Grid, Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings’ transmission unit.

Corporate renewable energy consumers are another target market for eRex, which would use a gas engine that can produce electricity from synthesis gas containing hydrogen as the primary component.

The plant will be Japan’s first commercial hydrogen power plant, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. By March 2022, it is expected to be operational.

It will purchase hydrogen from Hydrogen Technology, a Tokyo-based startup that generates the gas without emitting any fuel.

Despite the fact that Hydrogen Technology’s manufacturing costs are about 784 yen ($7.25) per kilogram, the company intends to sell the gas to eRex at a loss, which it claims would be covered by volume sales.

eRex plans to build a large-scale power plant capable of producing 50,000 to 100,000 kilowatts of electricity in the future, lowering power generation costs from about 58 yen per kilowatt-hour to 17 yen or less.
