Essar Group has made a major step into the green hydrogen sphere. The company plans to invest INR 30,000 crore in a new Green Hydrogen Plant located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, over the next four years.
This move aligns with Essar’s dedication to advancing clean energy, green steel, infrastructure, and more. Despite facing legal challenges, Essar remains focused on transitioning its portfolio towards more sustainable enterprises.
The new project in Jamnagar will leverage 4.5 GW of renewable energy to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen through water electrolysis. This process yields hydrogen, a clean energy source that emits only water upon combustion. Implementing green hydrogen can significantly aid in decarbonization efforts across various industries. The initiative marks India’s entry into the emerging global green hydrogen market, with Essar positioned as a key player.
The introduction of Essar’s Green Hydrogen Plant will enhance access to clean energy. Since green hydrogen does not rely on fossil fuels, it is pivotal in moving towards a net-zero future. Green hydrogen has substantial potential to decarbonize large industries, cutting carbon emissions and fostering energy independence. Its sustainable nature complements global efforts to meet decarbonization goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.
The green hydrogen project will create numerous job opportunities, demanding skilled labor in roles like technical professionals, engineers, and managers. Investing INR 30,000 crore over several years will open doors for local residents to engage with the project, improving living standards. Local employment boosts socio-economic growth, further stimulating economic advancement in Gujarat.
Essar’s commitment to community development is evident through strategic investments, encompassing over INR 1,00,000 crore, resulting in at least 20,000 new jobs. This includes an agreement with the Gujarat government for an additional INR 55,000 crore investment in energy transition and infrastructure. Essar’s initiatives drive regional development, aiding Gujarat’s economic journey and further advancing sustainable goals in the area.
