The EU plans to add hydrogen filling stations and electric vehicle charging stations to the trans-European transportation network (TEN-T). 26 projects from 12 Member States have now been chosen by the Commission for funding through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF).
“Approximately 2,000 charging stations and 63 hydrogen filling stations will be built with our 189 million euro investment. Four projects will contribute to the electrification of ground handling services at airports, for instance by installing charging infrastructure for service cars and electrifying ground handling equipment “Adina Vălean, the EU commissioner for transport, said.
Following the EU Member States’ ratification of the chosen projects on April 13, 2023, the Commission will make official financing decisions soon. With the recipients of successful projects, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) have begun to draft award agreements.
Background: Depending on whether the project is located in a country eligible for Cohesion Fund support or not, the EU financial contribution takes the form of grants with varying co-financing rates or unit contributions. Grants of €25.8 billion are available under the CEF Transport Programme for the years 2021–2027 to help co–finance TEN-T projects in EU Member States. More than 1,200 transportation-related projects worth about €29 billion have received financing from the CEF since 2014.
