Tower Group’s ambitious Exeter H2 Hub project marks a significant leap forward in the journey towards a sustainable, net-zero transportation network in the South West.

Scheduled for completion by 2026, this pioneering initiative aims to establish a robust hydrogen infrastructure that will revolutionize the region’s mobility landscape.

The core objective of the Exeter H2 Hub is to provide a reliable supply of hydrogen to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) operated by key stakeholders such as Wales & West Utilities, utility companies, and local councils. Spearheaded by Tower Group, the consortium leading the project plans to deploy a 5 MW pilot plant with mobile refueling capabilities in East Devon, showcasing the feasibility and scalability of hydrogen-powered transport solutions.

At the heart of the initiative lies the goal of accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as a clean, sustainable fuel for commercial fleets. With growing recognition of hydrogen’s potential as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, the Exeter H2 Hub seeks to address the pressing need for zero-emission transport options, particularly in sectors where battery electric vehicles face logistical challenges.

Furthermore, the project endeavors to explore the broader applications of low-carbon hydrogen, including its role in decarbonizing industrial processes within the region. By fostering collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders, the Exeter H2 Hub aims to catalyze the growth of the hydrogen economy and promote the widespread adoption of sustainable energy solutions.

The Exeter H2 Hub holds immense potential to transform Wales & West Utilities’ vehicle fleet, paving the way for the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology on a large scale. With plans to retrofit existing fleets and expand hydrogen refueling capabilities, the project promises to revolutionize transportation practices and contribute to cleaner air and sustainable industries.
