Feadship, renowned for its luxury superyachts, has embarked on a journey with the launch of Project 821 – the world’s first superyacht equipped with hydrogen fuel cells.

Project 821, a product of five years of meticulous planning and design, epitomizes Feadship’s commitment to environmental stewardship and technological advancement. With a length of 290 feet, it stands as the largest yacht ever built by Feadship, setting new standards for luxury and eco-consciousness in the yachting world.

Designed by British studio RWD, Project 821 harnesses the power of green hydrogen to drive both its propulsion system and onboard facilities, effectively eliminating carbon emissions. Fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity, coupled with lithium-ion battery banks, ensure efficient energy utilization while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Implementing hydrogen fuel cells in marine vessels posed unique challenges, including storage and safety concerns. Feadship’s innovative approach addressed these hurdles, paving the way for cryogenic storage of liquid hydrogen within the yacht’s interior. Despite the space-intensive nature of hydrogen tanks, Project 821 boasts a sophisticated layout that accommodates these essential components without compromising on luxury or functionality.

While Project 821 may not have the capacity to power transoceanic voyages solely on hydrogen, its fuel cell technology enables emission-free cruising at lower speeds and provides extended periods of silent operation while anchored. Additionally, the yacht features MTU generators running on HVO biofuel as a backup power source, ensuring flexibility and reliability in various operating conditions.

Beyond its eco-friendly features, Project 821 exemplifies opulence and sophistication. Designed by GA, its interior showcases a harmonious blend of neutral tones and textured fabrics, creating an ambiance of coastal elegance. With multiple decks offering expansive living spaces and luxurious amenities, the yacht provides unparalleled comfort and leisure for its discerning passengers.
