Ferrari Reveals Hybrid Car Patent with Upside-Down Hydrogen Engine

Ferrari has captured the automotive world’s attention with a patent unveiling a hybrid car featuring an inverted internal combustion powerplant fueled by hydrogen.

While the concept may seem unconventional, there are practical reasons behind Ferrari’s bold idea, coupled with intriguing innovations overlooked amidst the unconventional engine positioning.

The primary goal of Ferrari’s patented hybrid car with an inverted hydrogen engine is to explore new frontiers in automotive engineering, particularly in the realm of decarbonization and alternative fuel technologies. By incorporating hydrogen as a fuel source, Ferrari aims to reduce carbon emissions and push the boundaries of performance and efficiency in high-performance vehicles.

At the core of Ferrari’s innovative concept lies a unique fuel tank arrangement, comprising four tanks capable of storing hydrogen gas at over 10,000 psi. Two spherical tanks flank each side of the inverted engine, while the remaining cylindrical tanks sit atop the engine. The proposed car would feature an inline-six engine configuration, coupled with an electric motor driving the front wheels, positioning Ferrari at the forefront of hybrid propulsion technology.

Ferrari’s patent heralds a potential paradigm shift in the automotive industry, offering a glimpse into the future of sustainable mobility. By embracing hydrogen as a clean energy source and integrating advanced propulsion systems, Ferrari aims to set new standards for performance, environmental responsibility, and technological innovation. Moreover, the patent underscores Ferrari’s commitment to leading the charge towards a greener automotive future.

Beyond the unconventional engine positioning, Ferrari’s patent reveals several innovative features, including a unique transmission design and revolutionary turbocharger configurations. The integration of twin centrifugal superchargers driven by the transmission’s dual-clutch assembly promises enhanced performance and efficiency, while the turbocharged version with divorced turbines and compressors showcases Ferrari’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of engineering excellence.
