First Hydrogen, a pioneer in hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered vehicles (FCEVs), has achieved remarkable success in its fleet trial with UK utility SSE Plc.

The FCEV demonstrated an impressive range of 630km on a single refueling, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from SSE drivers. With its quiet, smooth, and efficient performance, the First Hydrogen vehicle proved to be a promising contender for the future of sustainable transportation. As a key player in the energy infrastructure sector, SSE’s participation in the trial marks a significant step towards their ambitious Net Zero Action Plan, aiming to transition over 3,000 fleet vehicles to electric by 2023.

The partnership between First Hydrogen and SSE is a testament to their joint commitment to accelerating the journey to net zero. As a forward-thinking utility business, SSE has increased its investment in renewables and electricity networks to £18 billion, with a strong focus on embracing innovative technologies that align with their sustainability goals.

The fleet trial in Aberdeen, Scotland, provided valuable real-world insights into the First Hydrogen FCEV’s capabilities. The vehicle not only exceeded the results of pre-trial commissioning tests but also demonstrated exceptional fuel efficiency and battery regeneration during journeys. The FCEV maintained its battery at maximum charge by regenerating from braking, highlighting the efficiency of First Hydrogen’s onboard energy management system.

SSE’s enthusiastic embrace of the trial and openness to innovation further strengthened the partnership’s success. The collaborative effort allowed the FCEV to undergo diverse driving conditions, including running at higher speeds with heavier payloads. Surprisingly, these conditions had minimal impact on the vehicle’s range and fuel cell performance, reinforcing the robustness of hydrogen-powered transportation.

The positive results of the trial have set the stage for a future powered by clean and efficient FCEVs. With SSE’s strong commitment to decarbonization and First Hydrogen’s groundbreaking technology, the potential for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to become a prominent feature in fleets of the future is promising.

Building on the success of the initial trial, both companies are considering a winter trial in Scotland to assess the FCEV’s performance in colder temperatures. Hydrogen’s advantages in cold weather over other zero-emission technologies make this trial a crucial step in further validating the vehicle’s capabilities.

First Hydrogen’s FCEV trial with SSE is a groundbreaking achievement, heralding the possibilities of hydrogen-powered transportation in the journey towards net zero. As both companies continue to pioneer innovative solutions, the path to a sustainable and cleaner fleet future becomes increasingly tangible.
