Gangwon-do recently conducted the ‘Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Cluster Vision Declaration Ceremony’ at Kangwon National University’s Samcheok Campus.

The project aims to create a robust hydrogen storage and transportation industry base spanning Donghae, Gangwon-do, and Samcheok, with a substantial investment totaling 317.7 billion won by 2028.

The Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Cluster is strategically designed to bolster the hydrogen economy supply chain. Recently securing preliminary feasibility approval from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, the project plans to commence the construction of a demonstration center and corporate space in the Donghae Bukpyeong 2nd General Industrial Complex from next year. Additionally, a hydrogen liquefaction facility near the Samcheok LNG acquisition base is in the pipeline.

Gangwon-do envisions becoming a trailblazing city in the global hydrogen economy, focusing on creating a national, full-cycle hydrogen economy. The emphasis is on ensuring economic viability, safety, and efficiency throughout the hydrogen supply chain. Kim Myeong-seon, the administrative governor of Gangwon-do, stated, “We will build a value chain based on liquefied hydrogen” and expressed the province’s commitment to becoming a ‘hydrogen special self-governing province’ by nurturing a specialized hydrogen industry.

The significant investment of 317.7 billion won underscores the commitment to propel Gangwon-do into a leadership position in the hydrogen sector. The plan includes constructing a demonstration center, corporate space, and a hydrogen liquefaction facility, fostering economic growth and job creation in the region.

Gangwon’s ambitious endeavor goes beyond regional boundaries. By securing a prominent position in the global hydrogen landscape, the province aims to contribute significantly to Korea’s overall energy transition. The vision extends to creating a hydrogen value chain that encompasses production, storage, and transportation, positioning Gangwon-do as a key player in the evolving energy paradigm.
