Namibia is emerging as a surprising contender in the global race for green hydrogen production, and Germany is playing a pivotal role in this transformation.
With a pledge of €40 million in funding, Germany aims to harness Namibia’s vast wind and solar potential to produce green hydrogen, fueling this small African nation’s ambitious energy transition. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to meet Germany’s climate goals while supporting sustainable development in Africa.
According to recent reports, Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has affirmed that the country possesses an abundance of renewable energy resources, positioning it as an ideal location for green hydrogen production. The agreement between Germany and Namibia outlines the establishment of hydrogen production facilities, expected to generate thousands of jobs and spur economic growth.
For Germany, importing green hydrogen from Namibia aligns with its strategy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and transition to a low-carbon economy. Namibia stands to gain significantly from export revenues, alongside improvements in local employment and energy infrastructure.
A recent study by a German energy consultancy estimates that Namibia could produce up to 300,000 tons of hydrogen annually by 2030, surpassing the current capabilities of several European countries.
