GKN Hydrogen, a division of GKN Powder Metallurgy, has commissioned its first compact and safe hydrogen energy storage system in Troia, Italy.

The storage unit, designed with safety measures, can store surplus energy generated by renewable sources in the form of hydrogen. This hydrogen is then utilized to produce electricity without emissions, helping to stabilize the grid during peak demand times or when renewable sources are not producing energy.

The system employs metal hydrides for hydrogen storage, a technology that allows for higher energy density and increased safety compared to traditional methods. The compact design also means it can be easily integrated into various settings, from residential to industrial applications.

GKN Hydrogen’s innovative solution dovetails perfectly with the existing infrastructure, offering Italy a potent tool in its quest for cleaner energy. The hydrogen storage system harmonizes with renewable power sources like wind and solar, capturing excess production and ensuring a steady electricity supply. This capability is especially crucial during times when the natural production of energy dips, such as at night or during cloudy days.

The Troia project is not just an isolated initiative but part of a broader vision by GKN Hydrogen to deploy these systems globally. Their goal is to aid countries around the world in achieving energy independence while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprints.
