Green hydrogen best substitute for oil and coal, argues Brazilian Ambassador

The Brazilian ambassador in Portugal argued that green hydrogen is the best tool to replace the use of oil and coal, considering that the barrel of oil will be replaced by 2050 by the barrel of hydrogen.

“We have to reduce dependence on oil and coal and reduce global warming, and green hydrogen is the solution,” said Raimundo Carreiro Silva at the opening of the Forum “The Challenges of Development – The Future of State Relationship”, which runs until Thursday in Lisbon.

“It is not possible to fully replace coal and oil for electricity, and green hydrogen is the solution,” said the ambassador, adding that the “h2b is a great opportunity to further strengthen partnerships and integration between Portugal and Brazil through the production and export of h2b, which will be the ‘commodity’ [raw material] energy that will replace oil and natural gas by 2050.

For the ambassador, the largest energy groups of the two countries will have an important role in the energy transition: “The energy business groups in Portugal, especially EDP and Galp, can be major producers of h2b in Brazil, taking advantage of the greater potential of wind and solar energy, both for domestic demand and for export to the promising European Union market, breaking the ties with the oligopoly of oil and gas.

Earlier, the President of the Board of Directors of the Brazil Europe Integration Forum (FIBE), Vitalino Canas, had already argued that Brazil should project itself as a power with global vision in the Atlantic space: “Brazil can gain a new role in the international production chains, in trade and even from a geopolitical point of view, and project itself as a power with global vision in the Atlantic space, not only in the South Atlantic”.

The Brazil-Europe Integration Forum (FIBE), which runs until Thursday in Lisbon, discusses the paths to economic and social well-being through the transformations imposed by the digital revolution, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the European war.
