JCB, a leading construction equipment manufacturer, has received official approvals for its innovative hydrogen engine across ten European nations, marking a significant breakthrough for green technology in the construction industry.
This advancement follows a £100 million development program aimed at creating a zero-emissions solution. Over the past three years, a dedicated team of 150 professionals has worked tirelessly on the project.
The company’s hydrogen engine has achieved type approvals from 11 licensing authorities in 10 European countries. This certification permits its commercial use in various machinery, paving the way for a broader adoption of hydrogen technology in the UK and Europe. JCB’s Chairman, Anthony Bamford, expressed optimism, highlighting the approval’s significance for the company’s future and praising the team’s dedication.
The Dutch vehicle authority RDW was the first to grant certification, allowing JCB to sell its engines in the Netherlands. Following RDW’s lead, other countries including Great Britain, Germany, and France have also approved the technology. This series of approvals underscores the growing acceptance of hydrogen as a viable energy source for construction and agricultural equipment.
JCB has already produced over 130 evaluation engines. These engines are operational in machines such as backhoe loaders and telehandlers. The engines are undergoing extensive real-world testing at customer sites, with tests reportedly progressing well.
