Gwangyang City convened a briefing session on the future of Gwangyang’s hydrogen economic ecosystem on the 8th in the City Hall situation room.
Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority, Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority, Green Energy Research Institute, POSCO, SPG Hydrogen, and others are among the approximately 20 participants.
The key direction of establishing the basic plan for fostering the hydrogen industry in Gwangyang, according to Jang Seong-hyeok, CEO of Hydrogen Knowledge Group, who participated as a serviceman, is to establish and promote specific plans for ‘confirmation of supply plan,’ ‘establishment of infrastructure,’ and ‘establishment of support system.’
The goal of the ‘confirmation of supply plan’ is to encourage the transition to a hydrogen society and industry by expanding businesses that can directly use hydrogen, and the goal of the ‘infrastructure construction’ is to strengthen the role of priming for the spread of the national hydrogen economy by building the initial infrastructure for the hydrogen industry. The creation of a support system was identified as a requirement for the functioning of a specialized agency to assist methodical project execution.
CEO Jang explained the approach based on the core research direction, which included attracting and nurturing hydrogen-specialized companies, designating a hydrogen-specialized complex, and establishing a hydrogen pilot city, a mid-to-long-term supply plan for hydrogen vehicles, and establishing the National Carbon Reduction Research Center.
He emphasized the importance of creating differentiated synergies by sharing the service contents of service providers and persons in charge of each institution to promote linkage with similar hydrogen economy revitalization services being promoted by related organizations such as the City Steel and Port Division and the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority.
Participants in this research service discover business items that take advantage of Gwangyang City’s unique characteristics that set it apart from other local governments, share roles through consultation with related organizations like Jeonnam Techno Park and Green Energy Research Institute, and improve service quality through selection and concentration. a request to be raised
Following the start-up report meeting, two intermediate reports, and expert advisory meetings, the service is expected to be finished in November 2022, after modification and supplementation.
“Hydrogen, which is drawing attention as a new development engine, is the core of the future economy and a driving force that will start an eco-friendly energy revolution,” stated Deputy Mayor Kim Kyung-ho. It’s critical to devise a strategy for promoting the hydrogen sector.”
“It is vital to listen to the perspectives of firms and professionals in relevant disciplines, and to share responsibilities in mutual collaboration through linking hydrogen-related services provided by each institution,” he added.
In the meanwhile, in August, the city inked a business agreement with Jeollanam-do, Gwangyang-si, and POSCO to turn itself into a sustainable hydrogen economy leading city, and on October 8, the city hosted the ‘2050 hydrogen economy vision declaration event’ on Citizen’s Day. The shift to a hydrogen economy was officially announced in front of the public.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries recently announced the ‘Hydrogen Port Creation Plan,’ which would be implemented at 14 ports around the country, including Gwangyang, Yeosu, and Ulsan.
By 2023, a ‘hydrogen complex station’ will be built at Gwangyang Port, consisting of hydrogen truck rest stops, hydrogen charging stations, and hydrogen power-producing facilities.
