European project “HI_MOV Cross-border Technological Corridor of Mobility with Renewable Hydrogen” sets its sights on establishing a cross-border hydrogen ecosystem in the Galicia-Northern Portugal Euroregion.

With a duration of 36 months, this ambitious project aims to propel sustainable mobility based on renewable sources, particularly green hydrogen.

The overarching goals of HI_MOV encompass a comprehensive analysis of the potential of green hydrogen as a mobility vector in the Galicia-Northern Portugal axis. Lasting until 2026, the project aims to enhance the training and technological positioning of entities in the Euroregion. Additionally, it seeks to collaboratively develop technological solutions for green hydrogen and demonstrate its feasibility through pilot tests in the cross-border space.

The project brings together a consortium of 10 entities from Galicia and Northern Portugal, including technological centers, universities, territorial groups, companies, and public administrations. CTAG, the Technological Center, takes the lead in coordinating HI_MOV.

The launch event at the CTAG facilities featured key figures, including Pablo Fernández Vila, General Director of Energy Planning and Natural Resources of the Xunta de Galicia, and Luis Moreno, General Director of CTAG. Emphasizing the potential of the region, Pablo Fernández Vila urged leveraging this opportunity to position Galicia and Northern Portugal as leaders in green hydrogen-related technologies.

Luis Moreno highlighted hydrogen’s pivotal role in mobility, especially in cases where battery usage is less practical, such as semi-heavy vehicles, buses, and heavy machinery. The project considers diverse applications, including maritime-port mobility, railways, and special machinery.

Xosé Lago, Regional Coordinator of POCTEP, stressed the strategic importance of HI_MOV within the approved projects, aligning with the Euroregion’s objectives. Nuno Almeida, Director of the AECT-GNP, emphasized the need for coordinated efforts at all levels to maximize opportunities presented by decarbonization.

The event featured a round table discussing “Green Hydrogen as an Opportunity for the Euroregion.” Experts delved into various aspects, including research, energy policies, and the business sector’s role.
