Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has taken a significant step in transforming Himachal Pradesh into India’s first green energy state by 2026.
He has started the construction of North India’s first 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Dabhota, Nalagarh. This project is spearheaded by Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) in partnership with Oil India Limited at a cost of Rs 9.04 crore. The Chief Minister urged officials to ensure the project’s completion within a year.
During the foundation ceremony, the Chief Minister reiterated the state’s ambition to lead in renewable energy. He highlighted the Dabhota Green Hydrogen Plant as a significant milestone in Himachal Pradesh’s pursuit of renewable energy and sustainability. This plant marks an essential step in the state’s journey toward becoming the first Green Energy State in India by March 2026.
To support the state’s green energy vision, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Oil India Limited in April 2023. The agreement focuses on developing solar energy, green hydrogen, geothermal energy, and compressed biogas projects.
After careful evaluation, a 4,000-square-meter site in Dabhota was chosen for the plant. The project is the state’s first large-scale green hydrogen initiative, highlighting the government’s dedication to sustainable energy. The facility will employ power from renewable sources for hydrogen production through electrolysis using an alkaline potassium hydroxide solution. This method minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, fostering a cleaner energy ecosystem.
The plant is expected to produce 423 kilograms of green hydrogen daily, utilizing 13 liters of water per kilogram, sourced from underground reserves. This production will consume around 52.01 units of electricity per kilogram. Annually, the plant is projected to generate 154,395 kilograms of green hydrogen.
