Hiringa Energy, alongside its partners and investors, has launched Australasia’s first zero-emission green hydrogen refuelling network – Hiringa Refuelling New Zealand (HRNZ).
With 25 percent of New Zealand’s transport emissions stemming from the heavy transport sector, the launch of HRNZ marks a significant step towards mitigating the nation’s carbon footprint. By providing a viable alternative to traditional fuel sources, HRNZ aims to propel New Zealand towards its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The establishment of HRNZ has been made possible through strategic partnerships with key industry players, including Waitomo Group and TR Group. Together, these entities have spearheaded the development of a network comprising three strategically located refuelling stations, poised to service 95% of the heavy freight routes across the North Island. This collaborative effort underscores the collective commitment towards fostering sustainable infrastructure for hydrogen-powered transport.
The launch of HRNZ heralds a new era for heavy transport in New Zealand, enabling hydrogen-powered trucks to commence commercial operations.
The establishment of HRNZ has garnered support from the New Zealand Government, with a significant loan injection of $16 million. Additionally, key investors such as K1W1, Mitsui & Co. and Green Impact Partners have demonstrated their confidence in the project, underscoring its potential to drive positive change in the hydrogen energy sector.
The deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles, exemplified by the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell truck, showcases the tangible benefits of transitioning to green hydrogen. With over 70,000 kilometers already covered, these vehicles have significantly reduced carbon emissions while demonstrating the viability of hydrogen technology in real-world scenarios. The establishment of HRNZ sets the stage for broader applications of hydrogen energy across various sectors, including marine, aviation, and stationary power.
