Hy2gen, a leading global producer of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen derivative plants, has unveiled its ambitious plans to construct a 200 MW renewable ammonia production facility in Campeche, Mexico.

Known as the Marengo project, this endeavor aims to produce approximately 180,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia, catering to customers in the European Union.

Renewable ammonia, a compound made from nitrogen and hydrogen, holds immense potential for decarbonizing various industrial and transportation sectors, including shipping. With the Marengo plant, Hy2gen aims to contribute significantly to the production of renewable ammonia for the European Union market.

Hy2gen CEO Cyril Dufau-Sansot emphasizes the strategic importance of the Marengo project for the European Union, highlighting the favorable conditions at the chosen site in Campeche. The region offers consistent wind resources and abundant sunlight, which will enable the plant to secure its electricity needs through a combination of a 415 MW wind farm and a 230 MW solar farm.

The agreement signing marks an important milestone, paving the way for feasibility studies and front-end engineering design (FEED) assessments. These studies will gather crucial design data and operational information for the production facility. The comprehensive studies are anticipated to be completed within 24 to 36 months.

Once the feasibility and design stages are finalized, the construction phase of the Marengo plant will commence. The plant is projected to become operational in the third quarter of 2028, heralding a significant step forward in renewable ammonia production and the global transition to clean energy.

The Marengo project holds tremendous promise in driving the renewable energy transition, offering a sustainable and low-carbon alternative for ammonia production. As the world strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, initiatives like Marengo contribute to a more sustainable future.
