Hybrid-Hydrogen Innovation by Renault

Renault is gearing up for the 2024 Paris Motor Show with the unveiling of the innovative Embléme concept car. This vehicle signifies the French automaker’s ongoing commitment to larger D-segment models and their journey towards decarbonization.

At the heart of the Embléme concept is a hybrid powertrain that merges battery electric technology with a liquid hydrogen fuel-cell system. The primary propulsion comes from a compact 40kWh battery and a rear-mounted 214bhp electric motor, allowing the Embléme to travel several hundred kilometers on battery power alone. The fuel-cell acts as a range extender, adding approximately 350 kilometers, which addresses range anxiety while maintaining zero emissions as it only emits water.

This dual system also offers weight reduction benefits. Renault has targeted a total weight of 1,750kg for the Embléme, which is significantly lighter than comparable electric vehicles, thus improving efficiency.

Renault emphasizes the Embléme’s low environmental impact, stating that its lifelong CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 90% compared to similarly sized electric vehicles. The use of recycled and recyclable materials in its construction further underscores Renault’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing.

The concept is built on Renault’s upcoming AmpR Medium platform, serving as a foundation for future models. This platform will support various production models in the pipeline, showcasing the versatility and forward-thinking vision of Renault.

A departure from the retro aesthetics of the Renault 4 and 5, the Embléme features a contemporary design that subtly nods to Renault’s design heritage. Notable is the smart placement of the badge on the front. Aerodynamic efficiency has been meticulously considered, drawing expertise from the Alpine F1 team to optimize the car’s body for improved performance and efficiency.
