Hydrogen-powered motorsport prototypes are slated to make their mark at the prestigious Circuit de la Sarthe during the buildup to the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
On the 15th of June, just before the commencement of the 92nd edition of the historic race, an array of hydrogen-powered prototypes, notably including MissionH24’s H24, will grace the circuit, captivating the audience with their revolutionary technology.
While the full lineup of participating cars remains undisclosed, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) has outlined the format for the demonstration. From 12 to 1 pm, vehicles equipped with fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines will showcase their capabilities with sustained laps, offering spectators a glimpse into the future of automotive propulsion.
This initiative builds upon the significant strides made by hydrogen technology at the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours. The event witnessed the inauguration of a dedicated Hydrogen Village within the fan zone, along with the unveiling of hydrogen-powered concept cars by Toyota, Solution F, and Ligier. MissionH24’s LMPH2G also graced the circuit with a demonstration lap, setting the stage for future advancements.
The ACO and FIA are actively collaborating on a new regulatory framework tailored to hydrogen technology, paving the way for manufacturers to vie for overall victories in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the Le Mans 24 Hours. The targeted debut of hydrogen race cars is set for 2027, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of motorsport towards sustainable practices.
