Atura Power has chosen Niagara Falls as the location for its first large-scale hydrogen manufacturing facility in Ontario.
Energy Minister Todd Smith and Environment Minister David Piccini made the announcement.
The Niagara Hydrogen Centre will manufacture green hydrogen with a 20-megawatt electrolyzer.
Several Ontario site feasibility studies analyzing the practicality of green hydrogen generation led to the selection of the region.
Green and low-carbon hydrogen may be used to power fuel cells in automobiles, blending hydrogen with natural gas to minimize carbon emissions, and serve as a low-carbon feedstock in high-emitting industrial operations.
The province is helping to fund the project by exempting it from the Gross Revenue Charge.
Atura Power is working on the facility’s preparatory stages in order to make a final investment decision by summer 2022.
The facility might be operational by early 2024, pending government financial approval.
