Hydrogen production of 10 tons per day in Changwon

In Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea Gas Corporation is constructing a hydrogen production base capable of producing around 10 tons of hydrogen per day.

Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Changwon City inked a commercial agreement for the construction and operation of a base-type hydrogen production base.

About ten authorities attended the occasion, including Sung Young-gyu, Vice President of Gas Corporation’s Safety Technology, and Changwon Mayor Heo Seong-moo. The two groups have chosen to work together actively to promote successful initiatives.

Changwon City will give the project site for free, and Korea Gas Corporation will be in charge of building and managing the hydrogen production base, which will cost a total of 41.4 billion won, including 9.2 billion won from the government and 32.2 billion won from Korea Gas Corporation.

Prior to this agreement, KOGAS chose Changwon City and Gwangju Metropolitan City as target project locations in May 2020, following an open call that included 17 cities and provinces throughout the country. A contract for business has been inked.

The hydrogen production base, which will be erected in the Sangbok-dong, Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si region of the Hydrogen and Energy Industrial Technology Complex, will create roughly 10 tons of hydrogen per day utilizing natural gas supplied through the pipeline. This facility has the capacity to produce more than 25,000 hydrogen automobiles.

The hydrogen refueling station in Changwon is now based on hydrogen generated from a tiny production site in Seongju-dong, with by-product hydrogen from Ulsan and other regions filling the gap.

When the base-type hydrogen production facility is finished in 2023, 100 percent self-sufficiency will be achieved, enhancing supply stability and economic feasibility and thereby speeding up the spread of hydrogen transportation and infrastructure.

“We will successfully complete this project with Changwon City to satisfy the government’s Green New Deal strategy and contribute to the improvement of energy welfare for people,” a KOGAS official said.
