RWE Gas Storage West aims to construct a hydrogen storage facility at Gronau-Epe by 2027 as part of the GET H2 initiative.

Additionally, storage facilities are a critical component of the future European infrastructure for green hydrogen.

The majority of the facility will be constructed on the RWE site in Kottiger Hook. The cavern will be connected to the above-ground facilities, as well as to a future hydrogen transport network, via pipelines located outside the storage site.

RWE has filed for funding through the “Important Projects of Common European Interest” (IPCEI) programme, in collaboration with partners from the GET H2 initiative. The announcement is anticipated in the second part of 2022. The final investment decision is contingent upon the receipt of a matching financing commitment. To achieve commercial commissioning by 2027, the formal approval procedure will begin in the first half of 2022 with public engagement.
