The Central European Gas Hub AG (CEGH) has developed a platform in Austria for the selling of green gases such as biogas and hydrogen, with plans to extend to additional Central and Eastern European nations in the future.
The CEGH GreenGas Platform will begin as a biogas marketplace, allowing for the purchase and sale of biomethane with or without assurances of provenance, according to CEGH. Green hydrogen will be exchanged on the platform whenever it becomes accessible on the market.
“The CEGH GreenGas Platform is an important step forward for the gas industry’s future. Green gases, in addition to diversification of natural gas sources, are critical for Austria’s supply security “Johann Pleininger, OMV’s deputy chief executive, stated.
Green gas availability is predicted to increase significantly in the next years, reaching 5 TWh in 2030, compared to the 0.1 TWh of biomethane now pumped into the Austrian network.
CEGH is collaborating on the project with the European Energy Exchange (EEX), which announced a proposal to develop a hydrogen trading market last week.
CEGH aspires to be the largest gas trading center in Central and Eastern Europe, with a total trading volume of 749 TWh in 2021, according to CEGH, which has minority holdings in the Vienna Stock Exchange and Slovakian gas grid operator Eustream a.s.
