Heavy-duty hydrogen trucks are set to play a significant role in reducing Australia’s carbon emissions.
Hydrogen trucks are seen as the ideal solution for long-distance travel across the vast country.
While still in development, hydrogen trucks stand out compared to their battery-powered counterparts that require extensive charging time.
Although hydrogen will lead in long-distance freight, electric trucks remain important for shorter deliveries from places like supermarkets and retailers. Woolworths has already placed an order for 16 of Foton Mobility’s electric trucks, acknowledging the role of electrification in reducing emissions for short-haul transport.
Changes at both federal and state levels have already permitted heavier electric trucks on some roads, although some are still under trial. The topic of low-emission heavy-duty trucks was also a focal point at the Transition to Electric Vehicle inquiry. Heavy Vehicle Industry Association’s chief advocacy officer, Adele Lausberg, mentioned that while businesses are keen to adopt these technologies, they require financial and regulatory support.
