HyStorage project, led by consortium leader Uniper Energy Storage, has achieved a milestone with the successful completion of its first test phase.

The primary goal of the HyStorage project is to assess the feasibility of utilizing Bavarian porous rock formations for the storage of hydrogen. With hydrogen emerging as a vital element in the decarbonization process of the European energy market, the project aims to demonstrate the efficacy of underground storage facilities in facilitating the transition to renewable energy sources. By leveraging existing natural gas storage infrastructure, HyStorage seeks to pave the way for scalable hydrogen storage solutions that enhance energy security and support the integration of volatile renewable energies.

Central to the HyStorage project is the innovative H2FlexiStore technology, designed to store hydrogen in porous rock formations deep underground. Through a meticulous testing process, the project evaluates the integrity of the reservoir and assesses the performance of materials under hydrogen exposure. Advanced simulation models simulate hydrogen flow and microbiological activity, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the storage process.

The successful completion of the first test phase underscores the transformative potential of hydrogen storage in Bavaria. With almost 90% of injected hydrogen recovered during the withdrawal phase, the project demonstrates the resilience and effectiveness of porous rock formations as storage reservoirs. Furthermore, material testing has revealed no signs of hydrogen corrosion, validating the suitability of existing infrastructure for hydrogen storage. As hydrogen continues to gain prominence as a clean energy carrier, initiatives like HyStorage play a crucial role in accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.

The HyStorage project benefits from strong government support and industry collaboration, with Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, endorsing the initiative as a crucial step towards renewable energy transformation. The consortium comprises experienced European partners, including Uniper, OGE, RAG Austria, SEFE Securing Energy for Europe, and NAFTA, backed by interdisciplinary support from industry and science. With regulatory approval from the Southern Bavarian Mining Authority, the project is poised to drive forward the hydrogen storage agenda in Bavaria and contribute to Europe’s energy transition efforts.
