Hyundai Engineering Co., a Hyundai Motor Group plant engineering subsidiary, is experimenting with high-purity hydrogen production utilizing ammonia, which is widely regarded as a next-generation environmentally benign raw material.

The business said that it has reached a deal with a local startup, AAR, to help commercialize a “ammonia decomposition hydrogen generation system.”

By decomposing ammonia through a spontaneous electrochemical reaction, the device creates high-purity (99.99 percent) hydrogen without creating carbon dioxide.

By decomposing ammonia in aqueous solution through a spontaneous electrochemical reaction, the ammonia decomposition hydrogen production technique developed jointly by Hyundai Engineering and AAR may create hydrogen with low energy input.

Unlike other approaches, this system can create high-purity hydrogen without the need for a separate hydrogen separation step.

Because ammonia is not bulky, a hydrogen production system the size of a container can create 300 kg of hydrogen per day, allowing it to compete on price.
