Hyundai Rotem, a prominent player in the transportation industry, has achieved a significant breakthrough with the development of a demonstration hydrogen-fuel cell powered tram.

As part of a national project to bolster the position of South Korean suppliers in the global light rail market, this innovative tram utilizes existing automotive technologies adapted for sustainable urban mobility. With backing from the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and collaboration from various research institutions, this project is set to revolutionize public transportation in South Korea and beyond.

The primary goal of Hyundai Rotem’s project is to enhance the competitiveness of South Korean suppliers in the light rail market on a global scale. By leveraging the expertise of the automotive sector and embracing cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology, the tram aims to pave the way for cleaner and more efficient public transit solutions.

The heart of this groundbreaking tram is the hydrogen fuel cell, which serves as the primary source of traction power. The fuel cell also charges a high-capacity battery on board. This battery, in addition to storing energy produced during regenerative braking, provides an additional boost during acceleration. The integration of hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology enables the tram to operate with minimal emissions and increased energy efficiency.

Hydrogen-fuel cell trams have the potential to revolutionize urban mobility, offering a cleaner and quieter alternative to traditional fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. With zero-emission operation and a range of 150 km before refueling, these trams can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of public transportation systems and improve air quality in urban centers.

The successful development of the hydrogen-fuel cell tram is a testament to the power of collaborative research efforts. By bringing together industry players, research institutions, and government support, South Korea is fostering an environment conducive to technological innovation and sustainability-driven solutions.

As Hyundai Rotem’s hydrogen-fuel cell tram takes center stage at the Korea Railways & Logistics Fair in Busan, it provides a glimpse of the future of urban transit. This eco-friendly and advanced transportation option promises to transform cityscapes, offering commuters cleaner, quieter, and greener mobility choices
