IHI Corp is investigating green ammonia production and sales in Malaysia in collaboration with Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd, a Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) subsidiary.

The business and Gentari Hydrogen have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the viability of using Malaysia’s rich solar resources to make and market green ammonia made from renewable sources.

Both parties would take into account a business plan for ammonia production in Johor, Malaysia, as per the MoU. This location is ideal for the production of solar energy. Green ammonia will be generated there, used locally for power production and the provision of marine fuel, and exported to the Japanese and Asian markets.

IHI Corp will carry out technical analyses and surveys of the ammonia demand in Japan for this study. In addition, Gentari Hydrogen manages numerous market demand surveys, as well as assessments of Malaysia’s infrastructure and supply of renewable energy.

The project seeks to establish a commercial ammonia production facility to start operations before 2030 after undertaking a feasibility study that lasts through the beginning of 2023.

Through this feasibility study, the parties hope to demonstrate various ammonia application models in Malaysia.
