IMI Critical Engineering, a leading provider of flow control solutions, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of its first field test for green hydrogen generation using the IMI VIVO polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer.

The pilot test took place at IMI Remosa’s state-of-the-art facility in Sardinia, Italy, and showcased the capabilities of the 200kW IMI VIVO PEM electrolyzer.

During the test program conducted in May 2023, the IMI VIVO electrolyzer efficiently produced 4.0 kg/h (44.0 Nm3/h) of green hydrogen at a pressure of 30 bar. This accomplishment marks a crucial step forward in advancing the adoption of sustainable energy generation, storage, and distribution.

The successful field test sets the stage for forthcoming installations of IMI VIVO electrolyzers at prestigious research institutes across the United Kingdom and Europe. These installations are scheduled to take place throughout 2023 and 2024, further validating the technology’s potential and paving the way for its widespread implementation.

The IMI VIVO PEM electrolyzer offers a versatile solution for various applications, including power-to-mobility, power-to-gas, and power-to-power. It is available in power classes ranging from 100kW to 5MW, allowing for flexibility to meet specific end-user requirements. The electrolyzer can be tailored through a turnkey configuration that includes options for high- or low-pressure storage tanks, compressors, and optional fueling equipment.

Jackie Hu, the divisional managing director at IMI Critical Engineering, expressed enthusiasm about the achievement, stating, “The successful generation of green hydrogen is a significant milestone for our organization. While IMI Critical Engineering has a strong legacy in traditional power generation applications, we have made substantial investments in PEM electrolyzer technology to support our customers and facilitate the transition to more sustainable energy solutions.”

Hu further emphasized the value of IMI’s Growth Hub incubation and acceleration program, which played a crucial role in bringing the IMI VIVO electrolyzer to market. Leveraging IMI’s expertise in flow control products, the electrolyzer represents a harmonious blend of the company’s rich heritage and future aspirations, offering a scalable solution for green hydrogen production.

The IMI VIVO electrolyzer and hydrogen storage vessels will be manufactured at IMI Remosa’s facility, which served as the venue for the successful pilot test. With its smaller power scale compared to larger units, the IMI VIVO electrolyzer is particularly well-suited for organizations embarking on their initial ventures into green hydrogen generation.
