The Indian government has initiated a call for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence dedicated to research and development in green hydrogen.
This initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. A budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated to set up these centers.
The primary goal of these Centres of Excellence is to drive innovation and promote sustainability, ultimately enhancing India’s energy independence. These centers aim to speed up the transition to a low-carbon economy by advancing technologies for the production, storage, and utilization of green hydrogen.
These Centres of Excellence will serve as hubs for cutting-edge research and skill development. They will encourage collaboration among stakeholders, including industry, academia, and government, to innovate in green hydrogen technology. This collaboration is expected to lead to improved process efficiencies and the development of new products.
According to the ministry, these centers will pool together expertise and resources to bolster the entire green hydrogen ecosystem in India. This effort is projected to significantly help in combating climate change, reduce India’s reliance on imported crude oil, and decrease trade deficits.
Launched in 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, set to run until the fiscal year 2029-30. The mission is part of India’s broader goal to achieve self-reliance through clean energy, setting a precedent for global clean energy transitions.
