India has taken a major step toward becoming a global exporter of renewable hydrogen and ammonia through a long-term offtake agreement signed between AM Green Ammonia India and Uniper Global Commodities.
The deal, formalized in Ahmedabad in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, commits Uniper to purchase up to 500,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia, certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin, from AM Green’s projects. Shipments are expected to begin in 2028 from the company’s 1 MTPA plant under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The agreement is significant for both countries. For India, it aligns with the National Hydrogen Mission and strengthens its role in the global clean energy transition, creating a structured export corridor for low-carbon molecules. For Uniper, renewable ammonia provides a feedstock and potential hydrogen carrier to decarbonize energy-intensive sectors in Europe, including chemicals, fertilizers, refining, and shipping, while offering among the lowest CO₂ avoidance costs due to its production process and absence of carbon feedstock.
AM Green’s approach integrates firm and dispatchable clean electricity solutions, ensuring European compliance with RFNBO certification standards. Founder Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty emphasized that the project will support multiple downstream industries, lowering emissions both in India and for international consumers. Uniper CEO Michael Lewis highlighted the strategic importance of a predictable supply of renewable molecules, noting that green ammonia could accelerate industrial decarbonization while maintaining competitiveness under clear regulatory frameworks.
The deal also reflects the growing alignment of India’s National Hydrogen Mission with Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy. Leaders from both countries underscored the importance of technological collaboration, regulatory harmonization, and strengthened business-to-business linkages. Uniper’s Middle East CEO, John Roper, noted that the agreement demonstrates how coordinated supply, certification, and demand-side measures can deliver large-scale emission reductions and competitive renewable molecules for European industry.
AM Green’s co-founder, Mahesh Kolli, described the agreement as the culmination of disciplined execution and strategic investment by partners including Gentari, GIC, and ADIA, creating an integrated ecosystem for rapid, reliable global-scale green ammonia production. The partnership is among the largest offtake agreements under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and represents a tangible step toward scaling renewable energy exports while supporting industrial decarbonization worldwide.
