India’s IET Opens Dual Centres for Green Hydrogen and EVs

The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) in India has established two new centres of excellence—one focused on green hydrogen and the other on electric vehicles (EVs)—designed to anchor long-term research and skills development in clean energy technologies.

The green hydrogen facility is powered by a smart renewable energy (RE) management system that integrates both solar and wind energy, currently generating 4 kilowatts of power to run an in-house hydrogen production system. While modest in scale, the initiative offers a real-world microgrid environment for studying renewable-to-hydrogen conversion dynamics.

“This is more than a lab experiment,” said IET Director Prof Vineet Kansal. “It’s a testbed for developing and evaluating smart grid controls, hydrogen production efficiencies, and system response under variable RE supply conditions.” The smart RE system simulates the complexity of larger grid interactions, offering researchers and students a rare platform to study multi-source renewable integration and hydrogen energy cycles in real time.

The EV centre complements this by offering a modular lab infrastructure for end-to-end exploration of electric mobility systems. Key focus areas include battery technology, drive systems, energy management strategies, and the interface between vehicle and charging infrastructure. Given India’s national e-mobility targets—which aim for 30% of all vehicles to be electric by 2030—the facility responds directly to the need for talent and innovation in the sector.

Together, these centres reflect a growing convergence in India’s clean energy education strategy: coupling practical training with research aligned to national goals, such as the Hydrogen Mission and FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme.

What sets IET’s initiative apart is its ambition to act as an incubator for technology transfer. By mimicking real-world conditions within an academic setting, the centres are positioned to support applied research that feeds directly into industry, particularly in hydrogen storage, smart charging systems, and grid integration protocols.
