India is poised for a green revolution in its transport, shipping, and steel industries with the launch of pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released comprehensive guidelines to usher in this transformative change, emphasizing the pivotal role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing key sectors of the economy.
Under the ambitious scheme, pilot projects will introduce green hydrogen-based propulsion technologies in buses, trucks, and four-wheelers. These projects, spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aim to develop fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based vehicles powered by green hydrogen. The initiative not only promotes eco-friendly transportation but also fosters the creation of hydrogen refueling infrastructure to support widespread adoption.
India’s shipping sector is set to embark on a cleaner, more sustainable trajectory through the adoption of green hydrogen. Pilot projects will focus on retrofitting existing ships to operate on green hydrogen derivatives and establishing bunkering and refueling facilities in ports along international shipping lanes. These initiatives, overseen by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aim to reduce emissions and enhance environmental stewardship in maritime transport.
In a bid to decarbonize the steel industry, pilot projects will explore the integration of green hydrogen across various stages of steel production. From Direct Reduced Iron making to Blast Furnace operations, green hydrogen will replace fossil fuels and feedstock, paving the way for low-carbon steel production. The Ministry of Steel, in collaboration with implementing agencies, will drive these initiatives, positioning India as a leader in sustainable steel manufacturing.
