Energy News is honored to welcome Dr. Alistair Miller to its Advisory Board, a luminary whose almost six-decade career in nuclear technology and sustainable energy research has left a legacy on the global energy landscape.

As a Researcher Emeritus at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)/Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Dr. Miller has dedicated his life to advancing nuclear energy, pioneering heavy-water production, including advanced processes utilizing hydrogen. His career extended into work on ways to displace carbon-based fuels, mitigating their devastating environmental consequences.

Dr. Miller’s illustrious career began in 1966 at AECL, where he has spent nearly 60 years driving innovation in nuclear energy. His work has substantially contributed to shaping Canada’s nuclear research agenda in the production and handling of hydrogen isotopes. His modeling of the displacement of fossil fuels with hydrogen using a mix of nuclear and wind energy demonstrated its substantial potential to reduce the global effects of greenhouse-induced global warming. His pioneering work has helped to define where hydrogen is uniquely suited to decarbonize transportation.

A graduate of the University of Glasgow with a B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry, Dr. Miller further honed his expertise with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Nuclear Technology) at Imperial College London. His academic journey laid the groundwork for a career defined by interdisciplinary innovation. Recognized as a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada / Institut de Chimie du Canada and a past Chair of the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering, Dr. Miller has long been a steward of scientific excellence, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the global energy community.

Championing Climate Science and the Hydrogen Economy

Dr. Miller’s wide interests extend beyond nuclear energy into climate science, raising awareness of interactions in atmospheric chemistry and of the devastating effects on marine ecosystems of ocean acidification. His advocacy for sustainable alternatives has been pivotal in advancing the hydrogen economy, including his role in inspiring the International Hydrail Conferences—a platform dedicated to hydrogen-powered rail transport.

Energy News looks forward to leveraging Dr. Miller’s insights to illuminate pathways toward a resilient, low-carbon future, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of energy pioneers.
